No More Why's by Anna Lemanski
Poetry
It was the 16th of November, a crisp autumn day
On my way home from work, passing children at play
It was then that I passed him, an everyday sight
The sign, blanket cup, I knew money was tight
I reached into my pocket for a little extra change
When I looked right at his face and I saw something strange
I saw his eyes
Every color of blue
Specks of grey black and white
That’s when I knew
This man was no stranger, but more of a friend
It was high school, I thought my life was gonna end
But he found me
Helped me through my struggle
And before I could thank him, for all of the trouble
He was gone
I never caught his name
I took the blame
The only feeling ashamed
But here he is
His eyes gorgeous
But lost
I ignored his cup, I picked him up, we back up
Right into the store, we bought many things
Food, clothes, and blankets, my heart had grown wings
And before I left, to go home where I am calm
I made sure to tuck $100’s in his palm
And then he cried
And I didnt know what to do
So I looked him in his eyes, every shade of blue
I said, “I know it’s hard, but wait a little longer,
If you keep your heart, I know you’ll grow stronger
As I walked away, I shed a single tear
But there’s nothing to fear
Something else is here
Now my heart is full, a feeling of fulfillment
He is always so kind, no looks of revilement
On his face
Or his eyes
No disguise
It implies
My sighs
The tear dries
No more whys
On my way home from work, passing children at play
It was then that I passed him, an everyday sight
The sign, blanket cup, I knew money was tight
I reached into my pocket for a little extra change
