The Stages of Meeting my Future Stepmom by Ayisha Patel
Nonfiction
What is she doing here?
saw her there, standing next to my dad like she had been there the entire time. I didn’t get it, what made her so special. My dad couldn’t see it, but she was replacing my mom. Taking her memory away, slowly but surely. I don’t know how, but I will make him see that she isn’t the one. How could he do that to me though? He knew it was hard enough for me to go between my moms and his house every weekend, but now he had to bring her? Just perfect.
Go Away
She was everywhere! She was at my dads house every weekend when I went, and came to all my tennis matches and violin recitals with my dad. She couldn’t just insert herself into my life like that. I refused to let her. “You played amazing today sweetheart.” I wanted to say you did an amazing job taking my dad from me but I bit my tongue.
Spring Break Goes Down the Drain
“No!” I shouted as I pulled away from my father's embrace. Today was the first time since that tramp came that I got to have a day just with my dad, and what does he ask me? He asks me to go with him to New York and meet her side of the family during MY spring break. “It would mean a lot to her and me if you could come. I really like her, sweetie, and I would love it if you would meet her family. You mom is fine with it.” Great, now I had no excuse. I crossed my arms over my chest and let out a loud huff, but as I stared into my dad’s comforting chocolate eyes, I thought of all the things he had sacrificed for me. I guess I could do this one thing for him, even if I’d rather scrounge my eyes out.
Daddy Stealer
“I’m so glad you could come, Ayisha.” Yes, I’m so incredibly happy that I get to spend my spring break with you, the woman who is standing in the way of mom and dad ever getting back together again. I pinched my mouth upward into something that resembled a smile. We began walking through Kennedy International Airport, and my eyes lit up. The sounds of crunching chips, the soft melodies of live music, and the overall buzz of the airport. I would’ve liked New York a lot more if I wasn’t with her. I looked up at the 5’5 brunette who had waltzed her way into my life. Instinctively, I grabbed my dad’s big, warm hand as I prepared to meet my daddy stealer’s family.
She Isn’t that Bad I Guess
Tonight was the garba, the whole reason I came to New York. I could hear everyone getting ready with the cling cling of everyone’s heavy jewelry and the excitement of everyone as they spun around, feeling like princesses. I wish I was with my family at home. I got ready quickly and quietly in a room, but as I reached back to clasp my blouse, I couldn’t reach it. Oh gosh, now what do I do? “Hey honey, do you need any help getting ready?” Reena said as she opened the door with a loud creak. I wanted to be stubborn, but I really did need the help. Defeated, I looked up at her with my big brown eyes and was taken aback. She looked really pretty, with her hair up and her pins dancing with the light, with her jewelry perfectly placed on her creamy brown skin. I wanted to look like that. Without me even asking, she placed her slender delicate fingers into my hair and began to turn me into a princess. In a matter of 10 minutes, I was spinning around the room, feeling prettier than I have ever felt. “Thank you!” “You’re welcome my dear.” I ran out of the room excited to show my dad. “Daddy, look how pretty I look,” I shouted as I spun around in circles. As I was showing my dad, I saw her laughing and smiling along with me from the corner of the room. Ok, she wasn’t that bad. She helped me get dazzled up, and made me feel welcome. I looked up and my dad who was peering down at me with his kind eyes and then looked at the 5’5 brunette who had waltzed her way into my life. If she made my dad happy, I could learn to accept her. She wasn’t that bad after all.
